Every state has moments when it tells itself that ordinary law is no longer enough.

Minneapolis: When the Blueprint Turns to Blood

On January 7, 2026, all the theory became horrifyingly real. ICE agents were operating in a Minneapolis neighbourhood. Residents gathered to protest. In the middle of the confrontation was Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three, sitting in her car, attempting to leave.

As confirmed by cellphone video reviewed by multiple outlet,s including The Guardian and CNN, an ICE agent, Jonathan M. Ross, stepped in front of her slowly moving vehicle and fired multiple shots through the windshield at point-blank range. Good was killed at the scene.

She was not undocumented. She was not a target. She was not armed.

The institutional response was immediate and unified. DHS Secretary Noem labelled the protest “domestic terrorism” within hours. Vice President Vance declared the agent immune from prosecution and suggested the public should be grateful. The official narrative, that Good attempted to run over the officer, unravelled under video review.

ICE did not suspend operations. It did not invite independent investigation. It closed ranks. The priority was not clarification, but control of the narrative. This was not merely a tragedy. It was a policy moment. And the institution chose insulation over accountability.

This is the moment when governments create institutions that do not exist to protect citizens from violence, but to protect power from citizens.

In Nazi Germany, that institution was the Gestapo. It was not born of legislation or democratic will. It was a creature of decree, created under Hermann Göring—then the Prussian Minister President and Interior Minister—who reshaped and centralised Prussia’s existing political police into a new organisation built explicitly to serve the new regime. This was not a democratic process. There was no transparent debate, no independent oversight, no judicial constraint. It emerged through raw administrative power and executive fiat at the precise moment the Nazi state was dismantling political pluralism and civil liberties. The Gestapo’s origin is inseparable from the broader authoritarian seizure of the state: it was the deliberate weaponisation of government institutions against political opponents. And Göring matters here. He was no minor bureaucrat. He was one of the most powerful men in the Nazi hierarchy, a man who would later be sentenced to death at Nuremberg for his crimes, cheating the hangman only by committing suicide in his cell.

Its creation had a single, brutal purpose: to eliminate opposition and enforce ideological control. Its stated mission was state security. Its practical mission was political domination. In 1933, the Nazis’ priority was to crush organised political resistance inside Germany. The early “enemy list” was not vague. It was concrete and immediate: Communists, Social Democrats, and trade union leaders were the core targets from the very beginning. The Gestapo was never a neutral police body that later drifted into abuse. It was designed as a political instrument from its first breath.

It began in Prussia, but its field of operation grew with the regime’s ambition, expanding as Nazi policing was centralised across all of Germany, and later operating across German-occupied Europe, embedded within the wider SS and security apparatus. But its power did not come from omnipresent surveillance or overwhelming manpower. It came from a far more lethal and sophisticated combination: legal exception, cultivated fear, and the active participation of the society it terrorised.

Its modus operandi was a blueprint for modern terror. It relied on intensive political surveillance, targeting individuals for their affiliations, private speech, associations, and mere perceived disloyalty. Crucially, a significant share of its investigations sprang from denunciations—reports volunteered by the population. The research of historians like Robert Gellately highlights how Nazi terror often depended not on secret agents, but on information freely given by ordinary citizens. This is the first masterstroke: it shows how a society can be pulled into policing itself. The legal mechanism for this terror was “protective custody” or Schutzhaft—the authority to detain people indefinitely without specific charge or trial. Under the Nazis, this became a routine administrative tool to remove political opponents and other targeted groups from public life, a bureaucratic signature that fed people directly into prisons and concentration camps. This system operated in a void. As the US Holocaust Memorial Museum documents, the Gestapo was not subject to legal or administrative oversight; courts could not overrule its decisions. Its repression was administrative terror. Arrests became files, transfers, orders, and quiet disappearances. This is how terror scales efficiently.

A necessary correction, for accuracy: “feminists” were not a formal bureaucratic category like the others. Women were targeted when they belonged to political movements, labour networks, or resistance activities. Repression followed affiliation and action, later expanding into the racial and social categories of Nazi ideology. The point is not that everyone was equally likely to be arrested. The point is that the regime reserved the unlimited right to decide who counted as dangerous, and the Gestapo possessed the unchallengeable power to make that definition a material reality.

The impact of this was not merely a body count. The Gestapo’s most enduring achievement was the way it reshaped the very fabric of everyday life and social behaviour. Fear became normal. When people can be arrested without trial, fear detaches from individual cases and seeps into daily calculations: what to say, whom to trust, what to avoid, what not to be seen reading, who not to be seen with. The Gestapo trained citizens to internalise risk. Consequently, trust collapsed because society had been turned into a reporting network. If denunciations are routine, you begin to live in a social minefield. Personal grudges become political accusations; ordinary conflicts gain lethal consequences. Gellately’s work is crucial here, highlighting that a dictatorship does not need total surveillance if parts of society begin to police themselves.

Simultaneously, the rule of law was hollowed out. When an institution like the Gestapo is insulated from all legal oversight, law becomes a performance, a pantomime of justice. The Holocaust Memorial Museum’s note that the Gestapo had the final word, that courts were powerless, is not a technical detail. It is the psychological pivot from citizen to subject. This persecution was procedural and therefore horrifyingly scalable. The violence was not only physical; it was administrative. Arrests, protective custody orders, transfers—all documented, all unchallengeable, as detailed in the Yale Avalon Project’s Nuremberg documentation. This revealed the final, chilling lesson: a society can be controlled without constant visible brutality. It’s called the National Security Strategy of the United States, and it reads less like a foreign-policy blueprint and more like a culture-war sermon. The references to democracy have nearly disappeared; alliances are demoted; Europe is reframed as a civilisation losing its grip. And somewhere in Moscow, the applause was immediate.

This should not be treated as a footnote. It should be treated as a geopolitical siren.

The NSS is supposed to be the clearest expression of America’s national priorities. For decades, that meant defending democracy, shoring up NATO, and keeping Russia’s ambitions in check. But this version does something else entirely: it echoes European far-right narratives, criticises EU governments using Fox-style talking points, and positions the United States as a kind of civilisational auditor sent to correct Europe’s moral decline.

The language alone is a warning. Biden’s 2022 strategy mentioned “democracy” more than ninety times. Obama’s 2015 version used it seventy-six times. Trump’s first NSS still managed around thirty. This one? Five. Five small, lonely appearances in a document that claims to articulate America’s role in the world.

And the context is not the traditional celebration of democratic alliances. Instead, the strategy accuses European governments of “trampling” core freedoms, suppressing opposition, censoring speech, and losing their “self-confidence” and “Western identity.”

The shift is unmistakable: Europe is no longer an ally to be supported. It is a civilisation to be corrected. And suddenly, the historian in you starts whispering words like “Weimar.”

What makes this even more surreal is the White House’s renewed devotion to the Monroe Doctrine. The NSS announces a “Trump Corollary” that declares the Western Hemisphere America’s primary sphere of influence. Europe, by implication, is something like a distant cousin — important on holidays, irrelevant the rest of the year.

Russia’s reaction to the new strategy was instant and telling. Kremlin officials praised that the document broadly aligns with Russia’s vision — a sentence no European leader ever wants to hear associated with American policy.

They liked the criticism of Europe. They liked the civilisational framing. They liked the demotion of democracy. And they especially liked the softening around Ukraine and NATO’s future burdens. The Kremlin recognised a familiar script: a divided Europe, a self-absorbed America, and a geopolitical landscape where spheres of influence replace shared values.

What Europe heard as an insult, Russia heard as encouragement.

Meanwhile, MAGA world understood the document exactly as intended: as validation. For years, figures like Nigel Farage, Marine Le Pen, and Viktor Orbán treated Trumpism as an ideological older brother — brash, chaotic, but influential. Now, that bond has its first official policy paper.

Germany’s AfD, already surging toward unprecedented national support, has openly cultivated ties with Trump allies and celebrated the new NSS as proof that their narratives about migration, identity, and “EU overreach” are gaining global traction.

France’s National Rally echoes almost line-for-line the same vocabulary about sovereignty and civilisation. Austria’s FPÖ markets its anti-EU hostility as alignment with a new American era. And Italy’s government — hard-right and rhetorically fierce — finds itself conveniently absolved of its migration failures by a U.S. document that treats Europe’s borders as a moral referendum rather than a logistical one.

This is not transatlantic cooperation. It is transatlantic radicalisation.

And we’ve already seen the prototype: Brexit.

Germany’s AfD climbs. France teeters. Austria leans hard right. Hungary and Slovakia drift closer to Moscow. Italy embraces illiberal rhetoric while its migration numbers hit historic highs. European democracies are not falling, but they are wobbling. And this time, there is no steady partner across the Atlantic offering reinforcement.

The new doctrine from Washington tells Europe, plainly:
Your democracy is your problem now.
Your unity is optional.
Your far right is legitimate.
Your institutions are negotiable.
Your civilisation needs repair.

It is not simply an abandonment. It is an invitation to fracture.

And the applause from Moscow confirms exactly who benefits.

The strategic reality is now unavoidable: Europe must defend its democratic order largely alone. The United States has stepped back into a 19th-century worldview, Russia is seizing the narrative terrain, and Europe’s far right is rising into the vacuum.

If Europe treats this moment as anything less than a structural break, it will repeat the oldest mistake democracies make: believing that decline only happens elsewhere.

Meetings in Trump’s Oval Office are less meetings and more survival trips. The room stays the same, but the genre changes every time — humiliation comedy, loyalty test, psychological experiment. A place built for history now functions like a reality-TV confession booth with better curtains and décor so loud it challenges the Constitution.

And we’ve seen the Oval Office do its worst.

We watched a wartime president walk in from an actual battlefield and get treated like a poorly prepared intern. Volodymyr Zelensky, fighting off Russia with dwindling ammunition and borrowed time, arrived wearing a military-style black sweatshirt and the weight of his entire nation. Trump mocked him for it. For the clothes. For the missing note cards. For failing to perform “respect to a man who has never shown respect for anyone.

That is the tone-setter. That is Trump 2.0’s Oval Office: foreign policy downgraded to outfit commentary.

So when Zohran Mamdani stepped inside, the expectations were already loaded.
This wasn’t a meeting. It was a pre-scripted boxing match.

Social media had the hype posters ready:
Trump vs. The Socialist Kid From Queens.
The strongman vs. the democratic socialist.
Capitalism vs. whatever Fox News thinks “communism” is this week.

If you placed bets on X, Trump was the favourite by knockout.

The president had spent weeks calling Mamdani a “communist lunatic”, the GOP had painted him as the new face of Democratic extremism, and Laura Loomer was busy testing new slurs in the political focus groups of her dreams. By all logic, Mamdani should have been fed to the same Oval Office machinery that ate lesser men in suits.

But the script cracked.
And that crack is where the real story begins.

From “Communist Lunatic” to “I’ll Be Cheering for Him”

Before Mamdani ever entered the room, Republicans had already airbrushed him into the perfect villain. He hit every trigger word they adore: young, attractive, smart, wealthy, well-educated, cultured, muslim, woke, leftist, urban, reform-minded, and optimistic about things other than tax cuts.

He was supposed to be their 2026 poster child for what happens when Democrats “go too far”.
Every suburban mailbox was one Photoshop session away from receiving a flyer warning that “Mamdani-style socialism” would tank property values, raise crime, and cause generalised collapse in the most important city of America and its entire masculinity.

Then the cameras rolled.

Trump, seated behind the Resolute Desk, did not attack. He smiled. Leaned back. Relaxed. Reached out to tap Mamdani on the arm, as if he were welcoming a promising apprentice. The man who had rant-screamed about Marxist gulags suddenly declared, live on camera, “I’ll be cheering for him.”

You could practically hear Republican strategists burning their campaign plans in real time.

And Mamdani?
He stood there with the composure of someone who has read the chapter on narcissism in politics twice and highlighted the good parts.

Hands clasped. Posture calm. Expression polite, not deferential.

He simply did not give Trump the emotional energy he feeds on.

The “radicals.” The “terrorists.” The ones wielding crayon and cardboard, inflatable costumes and toddlers on their shoulders.

They speak the fluent language of patriotism, duty, and faith. But this isn’t 4chan; this is the private Telegram group of your local Young Republicans — future lawmakers, Hill interns, self-styled patriots who pray before brunch and preach family values before casually joking their way toward cultural mass murder. They are the new face of American extremism, and they are bored.

The performance of normality ends here. A content warning is necessary; the following is a raw transcript of their conversations, featuring racial-genocide rhetoric, racial slurs, and descriptions of sexual violence.

Nothing fringe about it. These aren’t basement trolls. They are men who pay their bills on time, hold gold-level gym memberships, and never miss a networking breakfast. They Venmo their share after Bible study. Between lunch breaks and prayer groups, they trade genocide jokes. Hate isn’t the topic — it’s the background hum of their day.

They call it irony. It’s not. It’s boredom weaponised by entitlement.

And when this boredom seeks validation, it doesn’t find mentors — it finds microphones. They don’t turn to teachers or friends; they turn to algorithms that whisper back their fears in a deeper voice.

They find Jordan Peterson, the disgraced professor and wannabe self-help guru who turns male loneliness into moral panic. He tells young men to clean their rooms while leaving their minds in ruins, turning private insecurity into a public crusade against feminism — and don’t get him started on pronouns.

Andrew Tate, shirtless, chinless, and spine-optional, packages domination as discipline and calls it “natural order.” The source? His deluded brain, but it sticks — because nothing sells faster than confidence without content.

Joe Rogan’s “just a guy” persona is a strategic shield. He platforms bigotry, amplifies delusion, and when challenged, hides behind a shrug. But there is nothing neutral about his stage. He doesn’t just host the madness; he legitimises it, packaging poison as “forbidden knowledge” for millions who mistake his cynical passivity for reason.

Nick Fuentes, a Spanish-sounding neo-Nazi who dined with Trump, proudly calls himself a white nationalist and rebrands fascism as “Christian nationalism” with a smirk.

And The Daily Wire, the glossy propaganda of modern scripture, delivers sermons for a faith that doesn’t believe in forgiveness — if it were real.

Together, these figures form a digital pantheon of patriarchs for the disoriented. They promise a return to purpose once feminism, empathy, and accountability have been declared obsolete — gurus who offer paradise the moment equality dies.

This is their education: a classroom with no curriculum, just grievance. A place where manhood isn’t something you grow into; it’s something you perform against the world. Where the only moral rule is: never feel small, never admit doubt, never apologise.

It’s a cultural sinkhole. Because young men are the pressure point of every society — when they lose direction, everything shakes. They are told they’re victims, so they learn to behave like conquerors. They’re encouraged to see compassion as castration, equality as humiliation.

Trump didn’t invent them. He’s just what happens when loneliness metastasises into ideology. He gave them the language, turned insecurity into a creed. He told the lost they were chosen. Trumpism is emotional welfare; it feeds the starved with outrage. Project 2025 is simply the policy manual for this disease, a vision where biology is destiny and sociology is control.

Thiel funds the pipeline, Musk memes it into virality, Tate performs it in silk robes. Fuentes livestreams the sermon to prove hate can still trend. The message echoes through mainstream culture — from music videos to gaming streams: domination equals relevance. And the boys believe it. They become fluent in contempt. By the time politics enters the room, the work is already done.

JD Vance, the Vice President of moral convenience. When the chat leak hit, his reaction wasn’t outrage — it was deflection dressed as perspective. He brushed it off as “edgy, offensive jokes” made by “kids” and told critics to “grow up.” He compared the messages to something “far worse” by Democrats, placing the blame squarely on outrage culture rather than on the content itself. The irony, of course, is that while these “kids” are grown men in suits, Vance believes that actual eleven-year-old girls can be mothers. It was the perfect emblem of this new conservatism: purity for women, impunity for men; virtue on the podium, vice in the group chat.

But here’s the thing, the algorithm can’t hide the truth that leaks through their strained smiles and twitchy humour: they are miserable. They were never hugged enough and never heard, never loved without condition. Put one of these boys in a room full of genuine affection, and he would disintegrate. Because love demands vulnerability, and this new fascism trains you to fear it above all else.

They don’t crave power because they are strong. They crave it because they are emotionally starved.
And the ultimate tragedy, the silent punchline to their cruel joke, is that for a moment, in that feverish, shared hatred, they almost feel connected. It burns bright and fast, and in that false warmth, for a moment, hate almost feels like love.

Once upon a time, there was a rich man who loved nothing so much as gold. He had a wife who was quiet and kind, and a son called Donald. The wife would often say, “Be good, my child, for goodness is worth more than riches.” But the rich man would laugh and answer, “Nonsense! Gold shines brighter than virtue.”

When the mother grew sick and felt her end drawing near, she called her little boy to her bedside and said, “Dear Donny, remember to be honest and kind, and you will never be poor in heart.” Then she closed her eyes and died.

But the father whispered to the boy, “Be grand, little one. Be loud, and the world will bow to you.”

And the boy listened to him, for his words sounded easier than his mother’s. He forgot the grave under the tree and learned to count gold bars instead of prayers.

When Donald became a man — or at least taller — he built high towers with his name written on them in golden letters so that no one might forget him. The rooms inside were empty, but he said, “All is splendid.” He liked to stand before mirrors and practise his smile, his scowl, and his pointing finger.

He gathered around him men who praised him day and night. They said he was the cleverest, the strongest, and the richest. He believed them all, for flattery was the only song he ever liked to hear.

There was a golden window that cast his image across the land, and through it he spoke to the people. Thus, the Little Prince of Gold became famous in all the land. He shouted, “You are fired!” and they cheered, not knowing they were clapping for their own dismissal.

Now it came to pass that the country grew tired. The people worked hard but lived poorly. Bread grew dear, the fields lay dry, and no one on the high hills cared for them.

Then Donald stood upon a golden stair and cried, “The kingdom is ruined, but I alone can make it great again!”

The crowd believed him, for his words were easy and his promises bright. They crowned him king, and he took the throne with great delight.

At first, the court was full of many voices — some wise, some foolish. Some counsellors loved the kingdom more than the crown, and though they could not tame the king, they kept his temper from burning the country down.

But the king did not love them. “They are weak,” he said, “for they tell me what I do not wish to hear.”

In those days, the king loved to speak of deals and triumphs. He promised to make the kingdom richer by setting clever tolls on goods that came from faraway lands. At first, the people cheered, for they liked the sound of winning.

But the bargains were strange things. Prices rose, ships turned away from the ports, and merchants grumbled that the king had taxed their fortune into hiding. The farmers waited for gold that never came, and the smiths complained that iron cost more than silver.

Still, the king clapped his hands and called it victory, for he cared more for applause than for balance.

In the years between his reigns, a great spellbook was written by a House called Heritage. It was filled with rules for ruling — how to make servants out of citizens, and silence out of speech. It waited on a high shelf, bound in velvet and pride, until the day it would be opened.

When the king returned and cried, “They stole my crown!” The people, heavy in spirit once more, believed him. So he was crowned a second time.

Now he ruled without the wise, for he wanted no one who might tell him no. Around him gathered only the loyal — men who praised him louder than they prayed, and women who smiled when justice burned.

He placed over the courts Lady Bondi, whose smile was bright and whose justice was blind in only one eye — the other watched the king’s reflection. He called new ministers from the markets and the temples, men who loved profit and purity in equal measure.

Together, they opened the great spellbook and said, “At last, we shall make the kingdom pure.”

Then began the true undoing. The farmers struggled under his new tolls, which were spells meant to make gold return to the castle, but instead it fled abroad. The healers complained they could not tend the sick, for their halls were empty of coins. Teachers found their books rewritten or banned, with prayers in place of science. And all the while, the king stood before his golden window, smiling down at the people and crying, “You are free!”

And they taught their children: “Beware the man who promises greatness, for he will make you small first. Beware of gold, for it blinds more surely than darkness.”

It was performed religion again, now globally. A false gospel of tariffs, walls, and threats, cheered by the faithful, nervously tolerated by the rest of the world. Forgiveness was out, spite was in, and the UN chamber sounded like a church choir singing off-key while the organ burned.

The scripture was written long ago. We have seen the true face of grace and the grimace of the idol. The only miracle left to ask for is not that the false prophet would change, but that the congregation would finally open its eyes.

Free speech isn’t just some abstract legal concept—it’s the reason you and I can call a politician a fool without ending up in jail. Why we can criticise policies and voice our opinion. It’s the oxygen of democracy. It fuels dissent, drives progress, and makes space for ideas that challenge the powerful. And right alongside it sits a free press, the so-called “Fourth Estate,” whose job is to keep leaders sweating under the lights. Put them together and you have the cornerstone and the keystone of self-governance: one the foundation of individual liberty, the other the apex that locks the entire structure of accountability into place.

But let’s not kid ourselves. “Free” speech has never meant “say literally anything you want.” Every democracy draws lines. You can’t shout “fire!” in a crowded theatre if there is no fire. You can’t libel someone without consequences. You can’t make true threats. The argument has never been whether to draw lines, but where.

They howl about cancel culture, but hand them the wheel and suddenly Trump is calling the press “the enemy of the people,” laughing at assaults on journalists, and promising to “open up” libel laws so critics can be sued into silence. That’s not free speech—it’s information warfare. And into this swamp strolls Elon Musk, the self-anointed “free speech absolutist,” promising salvation and delivering something darker.

He promised to make Twitter a digital town square. Instead, he built his own private house party. He banned journalists who criticized him while re-platforming nut cases like Alex Jones and Andrew Tate, allowing misogyny, racism, and conspiracy theories to flourish. His platform, X, became a parody of free speech, where his own views are amplified and his AI, Grok, spread fascist rhetoric. Free speech, it turned out, was only welcome if it didn’t irritate the host. And just when you think the party couldn’t get any darker, reality crashes in. Enter Charlie Kirk—the man who preached that all speech is protected—gunned down on a university campus. Suddenly, the debate about free speech isn’t theoretical anymore. It’s blood on the floor.

The shock was instant. A young, polarising man, gunned down. Most people recoiled in horror. But a few trolls on the far left celebrated online. Disgusting? Yes. Illegal? No. That’s the dark underbelly of free speech: the right to be a monstrous human being.

Then came the hypocrisy, loud and raw.

Pam Bondi, the U.S. Attorney General, declared in her grief and fury: “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.”

Stop right there. That’s not the law. That’s not the Constitution. That’s rage talking. And it’s exactly the kind of overreach Kirk himself would have fought against.

Bondi backpedalled, but the damage was done. Suddenly, the right was willing to throw free speech under the bus. Allies of Kirk, in their anguish, betrayed his core belief.

The backlash wasn't confined to the U.S. In London, far-right agitator Tommy Robinson held a massive rally “for free speech” in Kirk’s name. Elon Musk livestreamed in, calling the left “the party of murder.” Think about that: the billionaire owner of a global platform demonising half the population as killers. Free speech repackaged as a weapon of mass distraction—loud, messy, and designed to blind.

So where does that leave us?

In a dangerous place. A place where words are weapons, principles are conditional, and grief tempts us to hand over the very freedoms we claim to defend.

Here’s the hard truth: free speech is messy. It’s ugly. It means defending not just the poets and dissidents, but also the idiots and trolls.
